How long does Ally hold a check?
For most checks (including personal checks drawn on other U.S. banks), up to $300 per check is available on the first business day after the day of deposit and the rest on the second business day. Checks drawn on an Ally Bank account and U.S. Treasury checks payable to you are available the first business day after deposit.
Ally mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability
Cutoff: 7:00 p.m. ET on business days for Ally eCheck Deposit; deposits after that or on a non-business day count as the next business day.
Ally says funds from eCheck deposits will generally be available by the 2nd business day after deposit, within the same timeframes as its funds availability policy (eCheck images are technically not covered by Reg CC). eCheck Deposit limits are $50,000 per business day and $250,000 every 30 calendar days.
Branch and ATM deposits
Ally is online-only: its deposit agreement says it does not accept deposits (cash or check) through an ATM or at any Ally office location. Checks can be deposited with Ally eCheck Deposit (app/online) or by mail.
Cutoff: Not published.
New accounts vs. older accounts at Ally
During the first 30 days of your first Ally checking, money market or savings account, up to $6,725 of a mailed check is available two business days after deposit and the excess no later than five business days after (mailed U.S. Treasury checks: up to $6,725 the next business day). Most eCheck deposits to a new account during the first 30 days are available no later than the fifth business day after deposit.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
Ally may hold check funds longer if you deposit a check for more than $25,000, redeposit a check returned unpaid, Ally believes a check won't be paid, or there is an emergency such as a computer or communications failure. Ally will notify you and says the funds will generally be available no later than the fifth business day after the day of deposit.
How to get your Ally deposit faster
Checks drawn on an Ally Bank account and U.S. Treasury checks payable to you are available the next business day. ACH direct deposits and wires are available the same day, and some payroll and government direct deposits may arrive up to 2 business days early.
Worth knowing: Ally's next-day amount is $300 per check, more than the federal minimum of $275, and its large-deposit hold trigger is $25,000 per check rather than the federal $6,725 aggregate.
The federal rules behind Ally's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Ally: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Ally's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Ally's public documents.
