How long does Bank of America hold a check?
Cash and check deposits are generally available no later than the first business day after the day Bank of America receives them. In some cases check funds may not be available until the second business day, though the first $275 may be available by the first business day.
Bank of America mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability
Cutoff: Based on the time zone where the account was opened: 9:00 p.m. ET for Eastern or Central accounts, 8:00 p.m. PT for Mountain or Pacific accounts (accounts opened in New Mexico, western Kansas and the El Paso region use 9 p.m. ET).
Unless a hold is placed, mobile deposits made before the cutoff on a business day are processed that night and generally available the next business day; deposits after cutoff or on non-business days are processed the next business day and available the business day after that. There is a monthly mobile deposit limit shown in the app. The agreement says its funds availability policy does not formally apply to mobile/remote deposits, though Bank of America may apply it at its discretion.
Branch and ATM deposits
Teller deposits made at a financial center before its close of business on a business day count that day; Bank of America ATM deposits made before the cutoff count that day. Night-depository deposits are received when removed, generally the next business day.
Cutoff: Financial center: before the branch's close of business on a business day. Bank of America ATMs: 8:00 p.m. local time in the state where your account is maintained (some locations may have different cutoff times).
New accounts vs. older accounts at Bank of America
During the first 30 days, cash, wires and the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's and government checks are available the next business day if payable to you and deposited in person with an employee (second business day if not, except U.S. Treasury checks); the excess over $6,725 is available by the fifth business day. All other check deposits are generally available by the fifth business day, and longer holds may apply.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
Bank of America may hold check funds longer if it believes a check won't be paid, you deposit more than $6,725 in checks in one day, you redeposit a returned check, you've overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there is an emergency; such funds are generally available no later than the 7th business day. Its FAQ says holds typically range from 2-7 business days, and customer service cannot release a hold early.
How to get your Bank of America deposit faster
U.S. Treasury checks, and cashier's, certified, teller's and in-state government checks deposited in person with an employee, are generally available the next business day. Bank of America suggests asking payers to use direct deposit, ACH, wire transfers or Zelle, which are typically available the same day.
Worth knowing: Bank of America will not accept third-party verification that a check has cleared at the paying bank to release a hold. Money orders, traveler's checks, third-party checks and foreign checks can't be deposited by mobile and must be taken to a financial center.
The federal rules behind Bank of America's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Bank of America: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Bank of America's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Bank of America's public documents.
