How long does Capital One hold a check?

Capital One's help center says deposits into 360 Checking, Essential Checking, Total Control Checking and Money accounts are generally available the next business day. Its account rules say its general policy is to make check funds available the first business day after receipt; if a delay applies, funds can wait until the second business day, with the first $275 available on the first business day.

Capital One mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 9:00 p.m. ET on a business day.

Mobile deposits submitted by 9:00 p.m. ET on a business day are generally available by the next business day, though Capital One may place an extended hold and will tell you when funds will be available. Daily and monthly mobile dollar limits apply and are shown in the app. Most deposits into 360 Performance Savings, 360 Savings, 360 Money Market and other savings accounts have a 4 business day hold.

Branch and ATM deposits

Check and cash deposits can be made at ATMs at Capital One locations and Capital One Cafés. Cash at a deposit-taking ATM is available immediately; checks follow the next-business-day policy, and checks drawn on another Capital One account are generally available the next business day.

Cutoff: ATMs: 9:00 p.m. ET (8 p.m. CT) on a business day. Branches: 2:00 p.m. local time or a later time posted at the branch (from Capital One's business-account rules; the consumer branch cutoff is not separately published).

New accounts vs. older accounts at Capital One

Not published. Under federal rules an account is new for its first 30 calendar days, and during that time ordinary checks have no federal deadline, so holds can be longer.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

In its published account rules, Capital One may hold check funds longer if it believes a check won't be paid, you deposit more than $6,725 in checks in one day, you redeposit a returned check, you've overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there's an emergency; funds are generally available no later than the seventh business day. Capital One says it will notify you of an extended hold.

How to get your Capital One deposit faster

Direct deposits and other electronic deposits from outside the bank, cash at deposit-taking ATMs, and transfers between Capital One 360 and Capital One Bank accounts are available immediately. Checks drawn on another Capital One account are generally available the next business day, and the account rules say Capital One may expedite part of your check deposits based on your overall relationship.

Worth knowing: Savings and money market accounts (360 Performance Savings, 360 Savings, 360 Money Market and others) usually carry a 4 business day hold on deposits, longer than checking. Capital One's mobile deposit terms say mobile deposits aren't covered by Regulation CC's availability requirements, though it generally follows its availability schedule.

The federal rules behind Capital One's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Capital One: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Capital One's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Capital One's public documents.
