How long does Chase hold a check?

Cash, wires and electronic direct deposits are generally available the day Chase receives them; other deposits, including checks, are available the first business day after the day of deposit. In some cases Chase may hold check funds until the second business day, but the first $275 is still available on the first business day.

Chase mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 11 PM Eastern time on a business day for Chase QuickDeposit.

QuickDeposit deposits to checking or savings submitted before 11 PM ET on a business day generally will be available by the next business day; later or non-business-day deposits are processed the next business day. QuickDeposit is subject to deposit limits that may change at any time, and Chase may delay availability for further review, notifying you by email.

Branch and ATM deposits

Checks drawn on a Chase account are usually available the same day when deposited with a banker at a branch, and some or all are available the same day at a Chase ATM. Other branch and ATM check deposits follow the next-business-day / second-business-day schedule; night-depository deposits count as received when Chase removes them (no later than the next business day).

Cutoff: Deposits made with a banker at a branch on a business day count that day. For most Chase ATMs the cutoff is 11 p.m. Eastern Time (8 p.m. Pacific Time); ATMs with an earlier cutoff show it on screen.

New accounts vs. older accounts at Chase

During the first 30 days, the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's and government checks payable to you is available the next business day (second business day if not deposited with a banker, except U.S. Treasury checks), and the excess the seventh business day. All other check deposits are available no later than the seventh business day after deposit.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

Chase may hold the full check amount, including the first $275, up to the seventh business day if it believes the check won't be paid, you deposit more than $6,725 in checks in one day, you redeposit a returned check, you've overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there is an emergency. Holds decided after the deposit are notified by mail or email by the next business day.

How to get your Chase deposit faster

Deposit checks drawn on a Chase account with a banker at a branch for same-day availability. Direct deposits, wires and cash are generally available the same day.

Worth knowing: Foreign checks are not covered by the Funds Availability Policy and may be sent for collection. Chase ATMs accept up to 30 checks and cash at most ATMs.

The federal rules behind Chase's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Chase: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Chase's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Chase's public documents.
