How long does Chime hold a check?

Chime takes paper checks only through Mobile Check Deposit in its app. Unless a deposit is rejected or subject to a 'longer delay', funds will be available no later than five (5) business days after the deposit is processed. Chime or its partner bank may, at their discretion, make some or all of the funds available the next business day for Treasury and other verified U.S. checks.

Chime mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 5:00 PM ET on a business day. Check images received and accepted after that count as received the next business day.

No later than five (5) business days after the deposit is processed, and the app shows when funds will be available and in what amounts before you submit. Agreement limits are a maximum of $2,000.00 per check (non-U.S. Treasury), $5,000 per U.S. Treasury check and $10,000.00 per month. Chime's help center says your actual limits are set automatically from your account history, how long you've had the account and your activity.

New accounts vs. older accounts at Chime

Not published. Under federal rules an account is new for its first 30 calendar days, and during that time ordinary checks have no federal deadline, so holds can be longer.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

A longer hold may apply if the check amount doesn't match what you entered, Chime or the bank believes the check won't be paid, you redeposit a returned check, your checking account had a negative balance anytime in the last six months, or there is an emergency. Chime may also delay funds based on risk factors such as the bank the check is drawn on, your account and direct deposit history, and spending activity. No maximum hold length beyond the 5-business-day standard is stated for longer delays.

How to get your Chime deposit faster

At their discretion, Chime or the bank may make some or all funds available the next business day for Treasury checks and other verified U.S. checks (personal, business, state/local government, Federal Reserve Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank and certified checks). Chime's help center says setting up direct deposit is one way to increase your mobile deposit limits; Support can't raise them manually.

Worth knowing: Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank; accounts are held at The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A. The Bancorp agreement lists cashier's checks and money orders as items you can't deposit through Mobile Deposit.

The federal rules behind Chime's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Chime: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Chime's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Chime's public documents.
