How long does Discover hold a check?

For existing customers (account open and funded at least 30 days), most checks deposited by mail make the first $275 available on the business day of deposit, the next $6,450 on the 2nd business day and the remainder on the 5th business day. Checks drawn on Discover are available in full on the 2nd business day when not deposited in person; U.S. Treasury checks not deposited in person are available up to $15,000 the next business day, with the remainder on the 5th business day.

Discover mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 6:30 pm Eastern Time on a business day. Checks received after that, or on a non-business day, count as received the next business day.

Existing customers generally get up to $275 the business day of deposit, the next $6,450 on the 2nd business day and the remainder on the 5th business day (checks drawn on Discover: full amount on the 2nd business day). Deposit limits apply but are not published; you see your limit in the app when you deposit.

Branch and ATM deposits

Discover has a single branch, in Greenwood, Delaware. For existing customers, checks handed to a branch employee in person are mostly available the next business day; for 'other checks' the first $275 is available the day of deposit and the remainder on the 2nd business day. Discover does not publish anything about depositing checks at an ATM.

Cutoff: In-person deposits at the Greenwood, Delaware branch count as received on the business day they are made. Checks mailed to the deposit processing center count that day if received by 12 p.m. ET on a business day; later arrivals count the next business day. Discover does not publish an ATM deposit cutoff.

New accounts vs. older accounts at Discover

A 'New Customer' is someone without a Discover checking, savings or money market account open and funded for at least 30 days. New customers' mobile deposits are generally available no later than the 5th business day, and Discover may delay them to the 7th business day. For mailed deposits, 'other checks' (such as personal checks) are available in full on the 5th business day, and U.S. Treasury checks are available up to $6,725 the next business day with the rest on the 5th.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

Longer holds can apply if Discover believes a check won't be paid; checks totaling more than $6,725 are deposited on one business day; a redeposited check was returned unpaid; the account was overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months; or multiple deposits were returned in the past 90 days. Other triggers are a check lost or damaged in collection, suspected fraud, a post-dated or stale check (over six months old), an outdated routing number, apparent alterations, or an emergency. Discover will notify you, and funds will generally be available no later than the 7th business day after deposit.

How to get your Discover deposit faster

Checks drawn on Discover (and, since May 17, 2026, checks drawn on Capital One) handed to a branch employee in person are available in full the next business day. Discover says it reserves the right to make funds available sooner. ACH credits and wires are available no later than the business day received, and early direct deposit may arrive up to 2 days early.

Worth knowing: Unusually, for existing customers the first $275 of most mobile or mailed check deposits is available on the same business day as the deposit. Discover is now a division of Capital One, N.A.

The federal rules behind Discover's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Discover: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Discover's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Discover's public documents.
