How long does Fifth Third hold a check?

For personal accounts, checks deposited at a branch, by ATM, with a bank employee or by Mobile Deposit are available the first business day after Fifth Third receives them. Other check deposits are generally available no later than the second business day.

Fifth Third mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 8 p.m. ET.

Standard (free) mobile deposits to personal accounts are available the next business day. With the paid immediate funds option, they're available the same business day. Daily and monthly limits apply; they're shown in the app and vary by account type and how long you've been a customer.

Branch and ATM deposits

Branch, employee and Fifth Third ATM check deposits are available the next business day after receipt. Night depository deposits are retrieved once at the start of each business day, so a daytime drop counts as received the next business day. A separate rule for non-Fifth Third ATMs is not published, though an ATM operator's failure to balance or reconcile is listed as a reason for longer delays.

Cutoff: In person at a banking center: banking center closing time (varies by location). Night depository: 7 a.m. local time. Fifth Third ATM: 7 p.m. ET.

New accounts vs. older accounts at Fifth Third

An account is 'new' for its first 30 calendar days, unless you've had another Fifth Third checking account for at least 30 days in the 30 days before. Cash and cashier's, certified, traveler's and government checks payable to you are available the next business day. All other check deposits are available no later than the ninth business day.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

Longer holds may apply if Fifth Third believes a check won't be paid, checks totaling more than $6,725 are deposited the same day, a returned check is redeposited, the account was repeatedly overdrawn in the last six months, or in an emergency or ATM operational issue. Funds are then generally available no later than the seventh business day, and Fifth Third will notify you.

How to get your Fifth Third deposit faster

Mobile Deposit's immediate funds option makes checks available the same business day for a fee; the fee amount is not published on the pages read. Electronic direct deposits and wire transfers are available the business day received, and in-person cash the same day.

Worth knowing: Fifth Third uses different cut-offs by channel: 7 p.m. ET at its ATMs but 8 p.m. ET for mobile. Basic Checking and Access 360° accounts are not eligible for Mobile Deposit.

The federal rules behind Fifth Third's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Fifth Third: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Fifth Third's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Fifth Third's public documents.
