How long does Navy Federal hold a check?

Navy Federal's general procedure is to make funds available on or before the first business day after the day it receives your deposit. For personal and business checks over $275, the first $275 is available the next business day and the remainder on the second business day. Checks of $275 or less and U.S. Treasury checks are available the next business day.

Navy Federal mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 6 pm ET, Monday–Friday. Deposits after 6 pm ET, on weekends or on a federal holiday shift one business day later.

If Navy Federal approves a mobile deposit submitted before 6 pm ET Monday–Friday, up to $275 is available the next business day and the rest on the second business day after approval. Deposits after 6 pm ET, on weekends or on federal holidays make $275 available on the second business day after approval and the rest on the third. Limits are $50,000 in checks per business day, plus 10 check deposits per day for personal accounts.

Branch and ATM deposits

Checks deposited in person with a branch Member Service Representative follow the next-day schedule ($275 next business day, the rest on the second). At a Navy Federal ATM, the first $275 of checks and all cash are available by the next business day, U.S. Treasury checks in full the next business day, and other checks' remainder on the second business day. Non-cash deposits at ATMs Navy Federal doesn't own (Vcom® ATMs) may not be available until the fifth business day.

Cutoff: 2:00 pm local time on a business day for deposits with a branch Member Service Representative. At a Navy Federal ATM, the cutoff is the time posted on that ATM. Deposits made after the cutoff or on a non-business day count as received the next business day.

New accounts vs. older accounts at Navy Federal

During the first 30 days for a new member, the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's and federal, state and local government checks is available the next business day, or the second business day if not deposited in person (except U.S. Treasury checks). The excess is available on the fifth business day. Funds from all other check deposits are available no later than the fifth business day.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

Longer holds may apply if Navy Federal believes a check won't be paid, you deposit checks totaling more than $6,725 on any one day, you redeposit a returned check, you have overdrawn your account repeatedly in the last six months, or there is an emergency. Navy Federal will notify you, and funds will generally be available no later than the fifth business day. Except in California, New York and Connecticut, deposits into a savings account may be held up to five business days. Longer delays may apply to checks deposited outside the continental United States.

How to get your Navy Federal deposit faster

Deposit in person with a branch Member Service Representative: state and local government checks, cashier's, certified and teller's checks, Fed/FHLB checks, postal money orders and other on-us checks are then available the next business day. On-us checks at a Navy Federal ATM inside or within 50 feet of a branch are available the next business day. Electronic direct deposits are available the day received.

Worth knowing: Navy Federal's mobile deposit FAQ lists 'eChecks - checks printed using a personal home printer' as ineligible for mobile deposit, so a home-printed check may need to be deposited at a branch or ATM instead. Money orders and travelers checks also can't be deposited by mobile.

The federal rules behind Navy Federal's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Navy Federal: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Navy Federal's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Navy Federal's public documents.
