How long does PNC hold a check?
Checks deposited before the 10:00 p.m. ET cut-off on a business day are available the first business day after the day of deposit. The first $100 of any deposit can be used that evening to pay items presented for posting, and checks drawn on PNC Bank can be used that evening too.

New accounts vs. older accounts at PNC
A 'new account holder' is a customer without a PNC checking account open more than 30 calendar days. During those first 30 days, $400 of deposited checks (and certain government, cashier's, certified, teller's and PNC checks) is available the first business day after deposit, and other check funds on the second business day. New High Yield Savings accounts opened online have an initial hold of up to 5 business days.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
Longer holds may apply if PNC believes a check won't be paid, you deposit checks totaling $50,000 or more in one business day, you redeposit a returned check, you've overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or in an emergency. In these cases funds are usually available no later than the fifth business day after deposit, and PNC will notify you. Separately, check deposits of $50,000 or more in one day get $100 that evening, $400 the next business day, and the rest on the second business day.
How to get your PNC deposit faster
PNC Express Funds makes the full check available immediately for a fee: 2.50% of each check over $100, or $2 for checks from $25 to $100. If an Express Funds check is returned for insufficient funds, PNC will not debit your account. Cash, wires, ACH, Zelle and RTP are available the same business day.
Worth knowing: PNC's large-deposit threshold is $50,000, far higher than the federal $6,725 figure, and its longest stated exception hold is the fifth business day rather than the seventh. Its 10 p.m. ET cut-off applies to every channel, including tellers.
The federal rules behind PNC's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including PNC: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on PNC's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in PNC's public documents.
