How long does Regions hold a check?
Regions' policy is to make funds from deposits available on the first business day after the day it receives the deposit. For some checks, funds may not be available until the second business day, but the first $275 of your deposits may be available on the first business day.
Regions mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability
Cutoff: 8 p.m. Central time on a business day.
Two options: 'Available for Processing Tonight' (no charge) – deposits before 8 p.m. CT on a business day are processed that evening to cover items that day, and you can use the funds on your debit card or at ATMs the next business day. 'Available Immediately' – funds available once Regions approves the check (typically 5 minutes or less) for a fee of 1%–4% of the check, minimum $5.
Branch and ATM deposits
Branch and ATM check deposits follow the same Funds Availability Policy (generally next business day). ATMs and night depositories display their own cutoff times; a deposit made after the displayed cutoff, on a weekend/holiday, or on a day Regions is not open counts as made the next business day.
Cutoff: Branch: closing time or no earlier than 4 p.m. DepositSmart ATMs: 8 p.m. Non-DepositSmart ATMs: noon local time (some have later cutoffs posted on the ATM). Regions says the end of the business day varies by location.
New accounts vs. older accounts at Regions
During the first 30 days, cash, wires and the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's and government checks are available the next business day if conditions are met (e.g. payable to you); the excess over $6,725 is available on the 7th business day. If those checks (other than a U.S. Treasury check) aren't deposited in person to an employee, the first $6,725 may take until the 2nd business day. All other check deposits are available on the 7th business day.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
Longer holds may apply if Regions believes a check won't be paid, you deposit checks totaling more than $6,725 in one day, you redeposit a returned check, you have overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there is an emergency such as equipment failure. Regions will notify you and say when funds will be available, generally no later than the 7th business day after the deposit.
How to get your Regions deposit faster
Mobile 'Available Immediately' option gives instant access once approved, for a 1%–4% fee (minimum $5). Electronic direct deposits are available no later than the day received; cash and wire transfers are generally available the same day. Regions also suggests asking when funds will be available if you need them right away.
Worth knowing: Regions' standard is next-business-day availability for most checks, faster than the federal 2-day standard. Its Funds Availability Policy does not apply to mobile deposits, savings or money market accounts, which have separate terms.
The federal rules behind Regions's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Regions: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Regions's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Regions's public documents.
