How long does Santander hold a check?
The first $275 of all checks you deposit on a business day is available no later than the next business day, and the rest by the second business day. Checks drawn on Santander and U.S. Treasury checks are available no later than the next business day.
Santander mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability
Cutoff: 10 p.m. ET; deposits received after the cutoff count as received the next business day.
Mobile deposits follow the 'other check deposits' schedule: first $275 by the next business day, the rest by the second business day. None of the funds are available on the day of the deposit. Santander says some check types may be limited for mobile deposit (see its Digital Banking Agreement).
Branch and ATM deposits
Branch and Santander ATM check deposits follow the standard schedule. At a Santander ATM, Santander generally makes up to $100 of a check deposit available right away, but only for cash withdrawals at a Santander ATM that day (not card purchases); this is a per-business-day limit.
Cutoff: Branch: the branch's closing time. Santander ATM: 10 p.m. (the agreement doesn't name a time zone; the mobile page uses ET).
New accounts vs. older accounts at Santander
During the first 30 days: direct deposits are available the same day. Cash, wires and the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's and government checks are available the next business day (if conditions are met); the excess over $6,725 is available by the 9th business day. Other check deposits may take longer than usual, up to the 9th business day.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
Longer delays may apply if Santander believes a check won't be paid, you deposit more than $6,725 in checks in one day, you redeposit a returned check, you have overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there's an emergency such as equipment failure. Santander notifies you by mail; funds are generally available no later than the 6th business day after the deposit.
How to get your Santander deposit faster
Cash, direct deposits and wires are available the same business day. State/local government checks and cashier's, certified or teller's checks get next-day availability when deposited in person and requested at the time of deposit. U.S. Treasury checks, Santander checks, Federal Reserve Bank checks and postal money orders are also next day. No paid instant-funds option is published.
Worth knowing: Santander ATMs make up to $100 of a check deposit available for same-day cash withdrawal at a Santander ATM. Its 10 p.m. cutoff applies to both ATM and mobile deposits.
The federal rules behind Santander's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Santander: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Santander's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Santander's public documents.
