How long does SoFi hold a check?
SoFi takes checks only by mobile deposit. Its agreement says mobile check deposits will generally be available no later than the 5th business day after the day of deposit, and a portion may be available earlier. SoFi's help center says most of the time a portion of a deposit is available the same day and the rest within a couple of business days.
SoFi mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability
Cutoff: 4:00 p.m. ET on a business day. Mobile check deposits after that, or on a non-business day, count as made the next business day.
Generally no later than the 5th business day after the day of deposit, with a portion possibly available earlier. SoFi's help article says checks deposited before 4 PM ET on business days are typically available by the next business day. The app shows the estimated availability date when you deposit. Mobile deposit limits are not published.

New accounts vs. older accounts at SoFi
Not published. Under federal rules an account is new for its first 30 calendar days, and during that time ordinary checks have no federal deadline, so holds can be longer.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
SoFi may delay the full amount of a mobile check case by case and will tell you when the funds will be available. If it delays availability, funds will generally be available no later than the 9th business day after deposit. The help center's common reasons for holds are verifying sufficient funds, a redeposited returned check, deposits from new customers, large-dollar deposits and frequent overdrafts; it gives no dollar threshold.
How to get your SoFi deposit faster
SoFi's help center says it is unable to speed up the release of held funds. Direct deposits are available the day SoFi is notified, which is often up to two days before the scheduled payment date. Instant Transfers from other banks are typically available immediately.
Worth knowing: SoFi says mobile check deposits are not subject to Regulation CC's availability requirements, and its maximum stated delay (the 9th business day) is longer than most banks'.
The federal rules behind SoFi's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including SoFi: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on SoFi's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in SoFi's public documents.
