How long does Truist hold a check?
Truist generally makes check deposits available on the first business day after the business day it receives them, after nightly processing, unless a hold is placed. If a check is held to the second business day, the first $275 is made available during nightly processing on the day of deposit.
Truist mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability
Cutoff: 9:00 p.m. ET on a business day. With the paid immediate availability service, checks deposited by 11:59 p.m. ET are included in that night's processing.
Standard (no fee) mobile deposits are generally available the next business day after nightly processing, unless a hold is placed. Mobile-specific deposit limits are not published in the documents read.
Branch and ATM deposits
Checks deposited at a Truist ATM follow the standard policy (next business day after nightly processing), with cash available immediately. Government, cashier's and Truist checks get next-day availability when deposited in person to a Truist employee; otherwise they may take until the second business day. Truist does not publish a separate rule for non-Truist ATMs.
Cutoff: Branch: 'earliest business-day cutoff time at a banking office is 2:00 p.m. local time'; later cutoffs may apply at some offices. Truist ATM: 9:00 p.m. ET on a business day.
New accounts vs. older accounts at Truist
During the first 30 days, direct deposits are available the same day, and the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's and government checks the next business day (the excess by the ninth business day). All other check deposits may not be available until the ninth business day after the deposit.
Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.
Longer holds and exceptions
Longer holds may apply if Truist believes a check won't be paid, you deposit more than $6,725 in one day, you redeposit a returned check, your account was overdrawn multiple times in the last six months, or in an emergency. These funds are generally available no later than the seventh business day after the deposit, and Truist says it will notify you.
How to get your Truist deposit faster
Truist's paid Immediate Availability Service (ATM and mobile check deposits only) makes funds available right away for 2% of each check of $100 or more, or $1 for checks under $100; checks under $5 aren't eligible. Wires, electronic deposits, cash, Zelle and RTP credits are available immediately.
Worth knowing: If you pay for immediate availability and the check bounces for insufficient funds, Truist says it will not debit your account. New accounts can face holds of up to nine business days on ordinary checks.
The federal rules behind Truist's policy
Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Truist: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Truist's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Truist's public documents.
