How long does U.S. Bank hold a check?

Cash given to an employee, electronic direct deposits, wires and the first $275 of a day's other deposits are usually available immediately. U.S. Bank's general policy for retail consumer and business accounts is to make the rest available the first business day after deposit; in case-by-case delays funds may wait until the second business day.

U.S. Bank mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 10:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday (business days).

The first $275 of your total daily deposits is usually available right away, and the rest typically the next business day if deposited before 10 p.m. CT. Individual deposits above a certain amount may take up to five business days, and U.S. Bank's Digital Services Agreement says that in most cases mobile funds are available within one to seven business days. Daily and weekly mobile limits apply and can be as low as $50 for accounts opened within the last 90 days.

Branch and ATM deposits

Branch deposits made before the branch's closing time on a business day are processed that day; the first $275 is available right away and the rest normally the next business day. Deposits at U.S. Bank-branded ATMs are generally available the next business day (sometimes the second). Partner ATMs generally don't take deposits, and a permitted deposit at a partner or non-U.S. Bank ATM may not be available until the fifth business day.

Cutoff: Branch: the branch's closing time on a business day it is open. ATM: 8:00 p.m. local time at the ATM location.

New accounts vs. older accounts at U.S. Bank

For the first 30 days, direct deposits, cash and wires are available the day received. The first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's, on-us (U.S. Bank) and government checks payable to you is available the next business day (second business day if not deposited in person, except U.S. Treasury checks), and the excess the fifth business day. All other check deposits are generally available by the third business day, or up to seven business days under a safeguard exception.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

If you deposit more than $6,725 in checks in one day, the first $6,725 is available the next business day and the excess on the seventh business day. U.S. Bank may also delay funds if it believes a check won't be paid, you redeposit a returned check, you've overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there's an emergency; funds are generally available no later than the seventh business day.

How to get your U.S. Bank deposit faster

State/local government, cashier's, certified and teller's checks, Federal Reserve/FHLB checks and USPS money orders deposited in person with an employee are available no later than the next business day. U.S. Bank says branch and ATM deposits 'may have faster funds availability' than mobile deposits.

Worth knowing: U.S. Treasury checks don't count toward mobile deposit limits but are capped at $7,500 per item and 5 per month by mobile. Wealth Management (Private Client) accounts get immediate availability on deposits.

The federal rules behind U.S. Bank's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including U.S. Bank: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on U.S. Bank's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in U.S. Bank's public documents.
