How long does USAA hold a check?

USAA's general policy for checking accounts is that check deposits are available by the first business day after the day it receives them. Some checks may take until the second business day, but the first $275 of your deposits may be available on the first business day.

USAA mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 9 p.m. Central Time on a business day for USAA Deposit@Mobile. Later deposits, or those made on a non-business day, count as received the next business day.

Generally, Deposit@Mobile funds are available the first business day after the day USAA receives the deposit. Any hold time and amount is shown in the USAA Mobile App before you submit, though USAA may extend a hold afterward. Your deposit limit is shown in the app; USAA will give advance notice if it lowers your daily limit below $1,000.00.

Branch and ATM deposits

USAA has one branch that takes in-person deposits, in San Antonio, TX; employees at other USAA Financial Centers don't accept deposits in person. Checks deposited at an ATM that accepts USAA deposits, by mail or in a USAA Deposit Box follow the same next-business-day policy. USAA's hold page says it could hold a check deposited at an ATM, by mail or through a teller for up to seven business days.

Cutoff: 5 p.m. Central Time in person at the San Antonio, TX branch (the lobby and drive-thru may differ). 7 p.m. Central Time at an ATM, unless a different time is posted. Mail and Deposit Box deposits count on the business day they reach the San Antonio branch.

New accounts vs. older accounts at USAA

During the first 30 days, cash and the first $6,725 of a day's cashier's, certified, teller's, traveler's and government checks are available by the first business day (second business day if not deposited in person, except U.S. Treasury and USAA-drawn checks). The excess over $6,725 is available by the ninth business day. All other check deposits will generally be available no later than the fifteenth business day after deposit.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

Longer delays may apply if USAA believes a check won't be paid, you deposit checks totaling more than $6,725 on any one business day into all of your accounts, you redeposit a returned check, any of your accounts has been overdrawn repeatedly in the last six months, or there is an emergency. USAA will notify you, and funds will generally be available no later than the seventh business day after deposit. There is also a cash-withdrawal limit: in general $275 of a deposit is available in cash on the first business day, plus $550 of other newly available funds by 5 p.m. CT.

How to get your USAA deposit faster

U.S. Treasury checks payable to you and checks drawn on USAA are available the next business day. Fed/FHLB checks, postal money orders, and (with a Special Deposit Ticket) cashier's, certified, teller's and in-state government checks are available the next business day if deposited in person with an employee; otherwise by the second business day. USAA says electronic direct deposits have no holds.

Worth knowing: New accounts face an unusually long maximum: checks other than official/government checks can take up to the fifteenth business day during the first 30 days. Deposit@Mobile eligibility is based on your account history.

The federal rules behind USAA's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including USAA: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on USAA's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in USAA's public documents.
