How long does Varo hold a check?

Varo takes checks only by Mobile Check Deposit in its app. Its General Terms say mobile check deposit funds generally are made available before the seventh business day after the day the deposit was accepted, and Varo may release some or all of the funds earlier. Varo's help center says that once a check is accepted it may take up to 5 business days for the funds to become available.

Varo mobile check deposit: cutoff and availability

Cutoff: 4:00 PM MST on a business day. Deposits accepted for processing before that count as received that business day; later ones count the next business day. Checks deposited by 4:00 PM MST are accepted or rejected by 11:59 PM MST the following business day.

Generally before the seventh business day after the deposit is accepted (help center: up to 5 business days after acceptance). The app's Pending section shows when funds will be available, and Varo emails the availability once a check is approved. Deposit limits depend on how long your account has been open and your account activity; they are shown in the app and not published as fixed amounts.

Branch and ATM deposits

Varo has no branches and does not accept checks by any channel other than Mobile Check Deposit. Checks sent by mail are returned by U.S. mail.

Cutoff: Not published.

New accounts vs. older accounts at Varo

Mobile Check Deposit is limited until you have activated your Varo debit card. Varo says access to mobile deposit and deposit limits depend on how long the account has been open; it publishes no separate first-30-days availability schedule.

Once an account is more than 30 days old, the standard schedule above applies unless an exception hold is placed.

Longer holds and exceptions

Varo says mobile check deposits are not subject to Regulation CC's availability requirements, and it may add delays at its discretion based on any factors it chooses. It may also return or refuse all or part of a deposit. No large-deposit threshold or maximum hold length beyond the 'generally before the seventh business day' statement is published.

How to get your Varo deposit faster

Varo may release mobile check funds earlier, in full or in part, at its sole discretion. Electronic payments such as payroll direct deposits are available no later than the day they are applied to your account. Varo publishes no paid instant-availability option for checks.

Worth knowing: Varo does not accept starter or counter checks, remotely created checks, travelers checks, savings bonds, third-party checks, or checks more than six months old.

The federal rules behind Varo's policy

Federal Regulation CC sets the outer limits for most check deposits at US banks, including Varo: the first $275 by the next business day, most of the rest by the second business day, and longer “exception holds” only in specific cases. Banks can be faster, and some deposit types (such as mobile deposits at some banks) follow the bank's own schedule. Read our full guide: how long does a check take to clear? Depositing by phone? Policies change. This summary is based on Varo's own published documents as read on October 27, 2026 (listed below). Your account agreement, the deposit screen in your app and any hold notice you receive are what count. “Not published” means we didn't find it in Varo's public documents.
