QuickBooks Check Printing Alternative: Printing on Blank Stock

QuickBooks Online does not directly support printing checks on blank check stock — Intuit's own help documentation says so. It's built to print on pre-printed checks you buy with your bank details already on them. If you want to print on blank stock instead, your real options are a pre-printed check order from Intuit, a third-party add-on, or a standalone check-printing app like Quick Check Writer.

What QuickBooks Online actually supports

Intuit's help article "Print checks on blank check stock" states that QuickBooks Online "currently does not directly support printing checks on a blank check stock." QuickBooks Online is designed to print onto pre-printed check stock — paper that already has your bank's routing and account numbers, your business name, and check numbers printed on it before QuickBooks adds the payee, amount, and date. Printing a full check, including the MICR bank-reading line, onto a plain blank sheet is outside what QuickBooks Online does on its own. Your three real options

1. Buy pre-printed checks from Intuit or a bank-approved printer

This is the path QuickBooks Online is built around. You order check stock with your account details already printed, and QuickBooks fills in the payee, amount, and memo when you print. It works well if you're already deep in the QuickBooks ecosystem and don't mind re-ordering stock and waiting for shipments.

2. Use a third-party add-on inside QuickBooks

Intuit's own documentation points to third-party solutions (such as PrintBoss) that connect to QuickBooks Online or Desktop and add blank-stock, MICR-line printing on top of it. These keep your checks tied to QuickBooks's records but add a separate subscription and setup.

3. Use a standalone check writer

Apps like Quick Check Writer print the whole check, MICR line included, on blank check stock without touching QuickBooks at all. This is the simplest option if you don't need the check to sync automatically with your books.

Where Quick Check Writer fits

Quick Check Writer adds your company and bank details once, then prints a full check — payee, amount, date, memo, and the MICR line in the standard E-13B font — on blank check stock, from your phone or computer. Plans start at $1.99/month, with a free first check. It has no QuickBooks, Xero, or FreshBooks sync of any kind: you'd print the check in Quick Check Writer, hand it over or mail it, and then record that payment in QuickBooks yourself, the same way you'd record a cash payment or a check written by hand.

That manual entry step is the real trade-off. QuickBooks Online's native flow (checks it prints and tracks itself) keeps your books in sync automatically. A standalone printer like Quick Check Writer is faster and cheaper to set up, but every check you print with it is one more line you enter into QuickBooks by hand — payee, amount, date, and check number — to keep your records matching.

Which to choose

If keeping QuickBooks as your single source of truth matters more than cost, stick with QuickBooks Online's native printing on pre-printed stock, or add a third-party MICR add-on so your checks still sync. If you mainly want to print business checks cheaply and don't mind a short manual entry afterward, a standalone writer saves money on both the software and the check stock itself, since blank stock is generally cheaper than pre-printed, bank-specific stock.

Printing on blank stock without QuickBooks at all

If you'd rather skip pre-printed checks and third-party QuickBooks add-ons entirely, a standalone app handles the full job on its own: add your company and bank details, type in the payee, amount, and date, choose check on top, middle, bottom, or 3-per-page, and print directly onto blank stock with the bank-reading line included. It won't touch your QuickBooks file, but it also won't require ordering bank-specific stock or waiting on a third-party integration to be configured correctly before your first check goes out.
