What “free” means here
Lots of tools call themselves a free check writer. Here is exactly what you get from Quick Check Writer without paying:
| Free, no account | With a paid plan |
|---|---|
| Your first check printed or saved as a PDF, with no watermark | Unlimited checks with no watermark |
| Write and preview as many checks as you like (later prints carry “SAMPLE – NOT VALID”) | Print, share and batch-print every check |
| One business and bank account | Up to 2 accounts (Personal) or 10 (Pro) |
| MICR line, amount in words, signature, register | Export checks to QuickBooks (Pro) |
No credit card is asked for the free check, and nothing renews unless you choose a plan.
How to print your free check
- Open the app. Go to quickcheckwriter.com and tap Start. On the plans screen, pick Free (“Try it now”). No account and no credit card are needed for your first check.
- Add your business and bank. Your name or company name, address, bank name, 9-digit routing number, account number and the next check number. The app checks the routing number's built-in check digit, so most typos are caught before you print. Add a logo if you like.
- Write the check. Payee, amount, date and memo. The amount in words fills itself in, and the dollar amount is padded with asterisks so nothing can be squeezed in front of it.
- Sign it. Draw your signature with a finger, upload a photo of it, type it in a handwriting style, or leave the line blank and sign with a pen.
- Line up your printer once. In Setup, print the alignment test page on plain paper, hold it over your check stock against a light and nudge the offsets until the boxes match. The test page doesn't use up your free check.
- Print or save the PDF. Print on blank check stock (check on top, middle or bottom, or three per page), or tap Share to save or send the check as a PDF.
- Keep the record. Every printed check goes into the check register with its number, date, payee and amount, so you can void it or reprint it later.

No account, no credit card, no watermark on your first check.
Write your first check freeMake your free check count
- Print the alignment test first. It's free and saves a sheet of check stock.
- Double-check the routing and account numbers. The app catches most routing-number typos, but only you can confirm the account number.
- Pick the right layout. Match the check position to your stock: top, middle, bottom, or three per page.
- Print from the device you'll use later. Phone printing can shift slightly, so line it up from the same phone or computer.
What you need
- Blank check stock. 8.5 × 11 inch sheets with the check on top, middle or bottom, or three checks per page. Choose stock with security features (microprinting, a void pantograph, chemical-reactive paper). See the blank check stock guide.
- A laser or inkjet printer. Any home or office printer that prints a clean, sharp line works. Laser toner bonds to the paper and is harder to wash off.
- MICR toner or ink (sometimes). The MICR line is always printed in the E-13B font. Whether it also has to be magnetic depends on your bank and your volume. Many banks read checks from images today, but some require magnetic toner for business accounts. Print one check, deposit it, and ask your bank if you're unsure. More in do you need MICR ink?
- Your routing and account numbers. They're on an existing check, in your online banking, or on a letter from your bank.
Free check writer vs. other free options
A blank check template in a word processor costs nothing, but it's easy to get the MICR line's font or position wrong, and that's the part banks read. Ordering checks from your bank isn't free and takes days. A browser-based check writer like this one lays out the MICR line for you on the ANSI X9 grid (E-13B characters at 8 per inch, in the bottom clear band) and gives you a print-ready check PDF in about a minute.
When you'll need a plan
If you write checks regularly, plans start at $1.99 a month for one bank account, $2.99 for two, and $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year for up to 10 companies (Pro has a 7-day free trial for new customers). Cancel anytime. See pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Is Quick Check Writer really free?
Your first check is free: it prints and saves as a PDF with no watermark, and you don't need an account or a credit card. After that you can keep writing and previewing checks for free, but printed or shared checks carry a “SAMPLE – NOT VALID” watermark until you pick a plan, from $1.99 a month.
Do I have to sign up to use the free check writer?
No. Pick Free on the plans screen and start writing. You only sign in if you buy a plan or want your checks kept under an account. If you later create an account on the same device, the checks and bank details you already saved come with you.
Does the alignment test use up my free check?
No. The alignment test page prints on plain paper and doesn't count. Use it to line up your printer before you print your free check on check stock.
Can I save my free check as a PDF?
Yes. Tap Share to download the check as a PDF or send it by email, WhatsApp or text. Reprinting or re-sharing that same check stays free.
Is a printed check from a free check writer valid?
A check you print yourself is a valid check when it has your correct bank details, is signed, and is printed clearly on check stock. Quick Check Writer lays out the MICR line in the standard E-13B font and positions. Some banks also want magnetic MICR toner, so ask your bank if you're unsure.
