Check writer app

Check writer app for iPhone, Android and computer

Quick Check Writer is a check writer app you can use on any phone or computer. Open it in your browser or add it to your home screen, then write, sign and print checks with the bank-ready MICR line, or share them as PDFs. It keeps a check register and works offline.

A check writer app that installs from your browser

Quick Check Writer is a web app, so the same app runs on iPhone, Android, tablets and computers. You can use it straight from the browser, or install it to your home screen so it opens full screen from its own icon:

  • iPhone and iPad (Safari): open quickcheckwriter.com, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android (Chrome): open quickcheckwriter.com, tap the ⋮ menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app.
  • Computer: use it in any modern browser; Chrome and Edge can also install it as an app.

After the first visit it works offline. A Google Play version for Android is coming soon.

What the app does

  • Writes real checks. Payee, amount, date and memo; the amount in words fills itself in.
  • Prints the MICR line. Routing, account and check numbers in the E-13B font, placed on the ANSI X9 grid.
  • Signs for you. Draw with your finger, upload a photo, type it in a handwriting style, or sign by hand.
  • Keeps a check register. Each printed check is logged with number, date, payee and amount. Void or reprint from the register, and export it as CSV.
  • Remembers payees. A payee address book fills itself in as you write checks.
  • Shares checks as PDFs. Send a check by email, WhatsApp or text, or download the PDF.
  • Prints in batches. Add several checks and print them together.
  • Handles more than one business. Up to 2 bank accounts on Personal and 10 on Pro, each with its own logo and check numbering. Pro can also export checks to QuickBooks.

How to write a check in the app

  1. Open the app. Go to quickcheckwriter.com and tap Start. On the plans screen, pick Free (“Try it now”). No account and no credit card are needed for your first check.
  2. Add your business and bank. Your name or company name, address, bank name, 9-digit routing number, account number and the next check number. The app checks the routing number's built-in check digit, so most typos are caught before you print. Add a logo if you like.
  3. Write the check. Payee, amount, date and memo. The amount in words fills itself in, and the dollar amount is padded with asterisks so nothing can be squeezed in front of it.
  4. Sign it. Draw your signature with a finger, upload a photo of it, type it in a handwriting style, or leave the line blank and sign with a pen.
  5. Line up your printer once. In Setup, print the alignment test page on plain paper, hold it over your check stock against a light and nudge the offsets until the boxes match. The test page doesn't use up your free check.
  6. Print or save the PDF. Print on blank check stock (check on top, middle or bottom, or three per page), or tap Share to save or send the check as a PDF.
  7. Keep the record. Every printed check goes into the check register with its number, date, payee and amount, so you can void it or reprint it later.

Printing from a phone

On iPhone, tap Share → Print to send the check to an AirPrint printer. On Android, use ⋮ → Share → Print. Phone printing can shift the page slightly, so run the alignment test from the same phone once. You can also save the PDF and print it from a computer.

What you need

  • Blank check stock. 8.5 × 11 inch sheets with the check on top, middle or bottom, or three checks per page. Choose stock with security features (microprinting, a void pantograph, chemical-reactive paper). See the blank check stock guide.
  • A laser or inkjet printer. Any home or office printer that prints a clean, sharp line works. Laser toner bonds to the paper and is harder to wash off.
  • MICR toner or ink (sometimes). The MICR line is always printed in the E-13B font. Whether it also has to be magnetic depends on your bank and your volume. Many banks read checks from images today, but some require magnetic toner for business accounts. Print one check, deposit it, and ask your bank if you're unsure. More in do you need MICR ink?
  • Your routing and account numbers. They're on an existing check, in your online banking, or on a letter from your bank.

Your data stays on your phone

Your bank details, payees and check register are saved on your device, not uploaded to our servers. If you sign in, your account holds only how you sign in.
